GLENTORAN V GLENAVON, A LOOK AHEAD 1s375g
On Saturday 28TH September 2024 Glenavon travels to East Belfast to play Glentoran. 2x1b6c
The Lurgan men, for the first time this season, have virtually a fully fit squad. James Doona, Rhys Marshall and Niall Quinn have recovered from injury and Jamie Doran came through his cameo appearance against Dungannon Swifts last Saturday unscathed. The only two absentees are Isaac Baird and Calum Birney. “Isaac is doing well,” said Stephen McDonnell. “He has begun light training. He could be back in full training by the end of October. Calum is also making progress. He might be available to play in a couple of weeks.”
The Blues’ boss was encouraged by his team’s performance in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with the Swifts. “We were up against a really good side which has been in excellent form, but, overall, we created better scoring chances than they did and deserved to win. We were disappointed to concede in the manner that we did. It was a situation we could and should have dealt with better. But we fought back well and might have scored two or three goals.”
McDonnell accepts that Glentoran will be a tough opponent. “Although their squad has changed a lot since we drew with them in March, they still have lots of quality,” he continued. “Playing at home, they will be expected to beat us. But we are in a good place. We have only lost one of our last seven games and have demonstrated that we can compete with the top sides. If we are disciplined and organised, there is no reason why we can’t cause another upset.”
